The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute states the typical treatment for COPD is focused on managing the symptoms by use of lifestyle changes and medication. Additional treatment includes preventative vaccines, pulmonary rehabilitation and oxygen when needed.
Patients should stop smoking and avoid breathing in other irritants. In addition, a doctor may prescribe a bronchodilator to open up the airway or a steroid inhaler to reduce lung inflammation to treat the condition, notes the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Surgery and oxygen may also be options. Patients should get seasonal flu and pneumonia vaccines and may be enrolled in a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
