U.S. military casualties have typically increased for each year between 1999 and 2010, reaching 1,953 deaths in 2007, a 21st century high as of 2015. The years from 2011 to 2014 saw annual decreases in military casualties as a result of scaling down active combat operations in the Middle East.

Between 2001 and 2014, the United States' conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan contributed the highest number of yearly military deaths. In 2007, 904 American soldiers died as a result of the war in Iraq compared to three in 2014. Military deaths relating to war in Afghanistan peaked in 2010 with 499 American casualties, compared to 127 in 2013 and 55 in 2014.
