Which of the U.S. states has the highest income per person?

For the year ending 2012, states with the highest per capita personal income included Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. Statistics provided by InfoPlease indicate each state showed a substantial increase from figures reported in 2009.

Connecticut is top of the list, with a per capita personal income of $58,908 - an increase of 8.3 percent from three years earlier. The average personal income in Massachusetts was $54,687, up from $49,875 in 2009. The mean individual income in New Jersey jumped from $50,313 to $53,628, while New York experienced an 11 percent increase for an average rate of $52,095 in 2012.

Earners in North Dakota exhibited the largest per capita income increase over the period - jumping 31.3 percent to $51,893 - to place sixth on the list.
