UltimateGuitar.com is registered in Kaliningrad, Russia, and owned by Eugeny Naidenov, the founder of the website and the Ultimate Guitar Archive. The website has been active since October 13, 1999, with operations beginning in full in 2002.

Eugeny Naidenov began building the archive that would lead to UltimateGuitar.com in 1998 while he was a student at Kaliningrad State University in Russia. The guitar tab archive was originally called Zappp's Guitar Archive. Since 2003, the website has added new features beyond the guitar tab archive, including include user profiles, a musician's forum, music reviews and lessons. As of 2015, the forum had more than 200,000 registered users.
