Is gum bad for you?

Gum containing sugar should be used minimally, as it contains acids that may lead to cavities. However, sugar-free gum is beneficial because it stimulates saliva production that helps wash away the bacteria that harm teeth.
Chewing gum regularly helps to remove debris in the mouth when brushing is not possible. As food remains on the teeth for extended periods of time, it collects the bacteria the leads to cavities, according to WebMD.
Non-sugar sweeteners found in most sugarless gums include maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol or xylitol, which also work to directly kill cavity-causing bacteria. When paired with regular brushing and flossing, sugar-free gum is useful in maintaining good oral health.
