How do you uninstall the Ask Toolbar?

The Ask Toolbar is a potentially unwanted program toolbar that is usually installed as a bundle with another program and can hijack the home page and search engine of a user. It can be uninstalled manually, with the help of a malware removal tool or simply disabled from the browser. Potentially unwanted programs, or PUPs, are not technically malware because their effects are not considered detrimental in all circumstances, but most users will want to avoid them.

1. Uninstall the Ask Toolbar manually
Make sure all browsers are closed by checking the Task Manager. Open Control Panel and choose Uninstall a program. Find Ask Toolbar in the list of applications and uninstall it.
2. Clean the browser
The Ask Toolbar installs several browser extensions that need to be removed manually from the browser. For Internet Explorer, click on "Manage Add-ons" in the Tools menu and select all extensions associated with Ask.com before clicking the Disable button. For Chrome, remove the extensions by clicking on Settings, Tools and then Extensions. For Mozilla Firefox, click on Tools, select Add-ons and click the Remove button for all Ask.com extensions.
3. Use a malware removal tool
If the manual installation does not work, install a malware removal tool from a trusted source and use it to scan the computer. When the scan is complete, the Ask Toolbar should be on the list of potential threats. Choose to remove it when the program asks for an action for detected malware or PUPs.
