Meijer is an American hypermarket chain credited with inventing the modern concept of commercial supercenters in 1962. Hendrik Meijer, a Dutch immigrant, founded the company in 1934, initially as a supermarket chain serving the Michigan area. As of 2015, Meijer is a the 27th largest retailer in the country. Meijer department stores are available in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin and Kentucky.
