Is the United States dependent on foreign oil?

The United States relies on foreign oil for its annual consumption. Approximately 78 percent of total imported petroleum products in 2013 were crude oil, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, or EIA.

In 2013, the U.S consumed around 9.9 million barrels per day of oil and other petroleum derived products that were bought from abroad. About 80 countries from around the world supply oil to the Americans. The report also showed that the top five exporters of petroleum to the U.S. in 2013 are Canada, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Venezuela and Russia, which accounted for 42 percent, 21 percent, 6 percent, 12 percent and 7 percent, respectively, of net petroleum imports.
