The University of Pittsburgh Panther football team has a long history of success in the history of NCAA Division 1 football. The team won the 1976 National Championship, and its list of professional football alumni include Hall of Fame inductees Dan Marino, Tony Dorsett, Mike Ditka and Curtis Martin.

In the programs history, the Panthers won nine National Championships, which is the most of any college in the Eastern United States and the sixth most in NCAA history. The Panthers additionally played in 31 bowl games winning 13 of them. The Panthers joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013 after 23 years in the Big East Conference.
