What is unschooling?

Unschooling is a type of homeschooling that allows the student complete control over his learning. Students do not have to follow a structured curriculum; rather, they pursue subjects that pique their interest.
Although parents and mentors don't "force" a specific learning plan or track, they assist the learner in discovering new information and interests. Often, children aren't forced to learn how to read, learning instead when they are ready. Because the learning that is done is based on the child's individualized interests, the child can pursue a diverse range of subjects each day or week, from geography to Web design to literature.
