The contribution limit for an individual in a presidential primary election is $2,700 per candidate. For a general election, individuals may contribute up to $2,700 for a non-federally funded candidate or $2,700 to the compliance fund of a federally funded Democrat or Republican, as of 2015.

Married spouses have separate contribution limits, even if only one earns an income. A married couple may contribute up to $5,400 to a campaign, which is $2,700 each. Direct campaign contributions cannot come from foreign nationals, minors, Federal government contractors, corporations and labor unions. One individual cannot make contributions in the name of another.
