The upper middle class pay range is typically $100,000 a year or more, as of September 2012. The U.S. Census Bureau claims that the upper middle class is within the top one-third of people in the United States.
The upper middle class typically includes people that have a high level of college education, usually with post-graduate degrees. These people often have high-level white-collar positions.
The next level up is known as upper class, or the "5 percent." This group of people make an average of $150,000 or more annually, as of September 2012. The very top of the ladder is the "1 percent," which makes upward of $250,000 a year.
