What is an upscale casual dress code?

Upscale casual is a semi-formal look, mixing upscale pieces with comfortable, more casual pieces, such as jeans with a V-neck shirt and blazer for men or skinny-leg khakis, heels and a nice blouse for ladies. Upscale casual requires avoiding certain articles of clothing as much as it incorporates others.

For men, T-shirts worn alone and rubber-soled shoes should not be worn for an upscale casual dress code, but dark jeans or pants and collared shirts and blazers are fine. Flip-flops are never upscale for either gender. Black slacks and little black dresses are great upscale casual staples for ladies that can be dressed up with jewelry and a pair of heels or dressed down with a pair of flats.
