Does dental insurance cover dental abscess treatment?

Dental insurance covers the cost and treatment of a dental abscess, according to the National Association of Dental Plans. An abscess is an infection that requires immediate attention, so it is considered a medically necessary treatment.
Dental care is typically divided into seven different categories that are covered, but most plans only include four of them, as stated by the NADP. Of the four that are universally included, oral surgery, which an abscess falls under, is one of them. Other procedures that insurers typically cover under the category of oral surgery include tooth removal, tissue biopsy and other small medical procedures.
