Who is Uranus named after?

The planet Uranus is named after the god Ouranos, or Uranus, from ancient Greek mythology. Uranus is the only planet in the solar system to be named after a god from Greek mythology rather than from Roman mythology.

Uranus was discovered on March 13, 1781, by Sir William Herschel, who suggested the planet be named after King George III of England, his patron. The final name was proposed by Johann Elert Bode, a German astronomer who argued that the planet should be named after Uranus, the father of Saturn, just as the previously discovered planet Saturn had been named after the father of Jupiter.
