What is Venus named after?

The planet Venus was named after the Roman goddess Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Venus was considered a major deity, and was also referred to as Aphrodite by the Greeks. Venus was married to Vulcan, but Romans believed Mars, the god of war, and Adonis were her lovers.

Vulcan was one of the most infamous and disliked gods, but Jupiter gave Venus to Vulcan in thanks for thunderbolts. Legends of Venus' birth suggested she was the daughter of Jupiter and Dione, or that she came from the foam of the sea, which carried her to the isle of Cyprus.
