URL stands for uniform resource locator. A URL specifies the addresses of various network resources on the Internet. Examples of these resources are hypertext pages, images and sound files.
A URL consists of two main parts: the protocol identifier and resource name. The protocol identifier specifies how information from the link is transferred. An example of a protocol used for Web resources is hypertext transfer protocol, or HTTP. The resource name specifies the Internet Protocol, or IP, address or the domain name where the resource is located.
A URL is one type of a uniform resource identifier, a generic term for all types of names and addresses referring to objects on the Internet.
