It's a unique seven, eight or nine-digit number that's assigned to a non-citizen when he or she receives his or her A file. The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for ensuring every alien has this number. Aliens are individuals who are not nationals or citizens of the United States.

The nine-digit U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) number recorded on the front of the Permanent Resident Cards, issued after May 10, 2010, is similar to the Alien Registration Number. The number is an “A” followed by eight numbers, for example, A34 456 576. Though, some A numbers issued today consist of an “A” followed by nine digits, for instance, A 201 356 689.
