Do you have to use a special kind of detergent in front-loading washers?

Because most front-loading washers are high-efficiency, or HE washers, special HE detergent is recommended. Using regular detergent in HE machines often results in too many suds, which confuses the washing cycles and makes the rinsing of clothes difficult. It may also shorten the life of the washer.

Since HE washing machines use less water than regular washers, HE detergents are concentrated and specially formulated to produce fewer suds which cleans clothes more effectively in less water. HE detergents are marked with the HE symbol and are sold along with regular laundry soap. HE detergents are acceptable for use in both regular and HE washing machines.
