How do you use Metamucil to lower cholesterol?

In adults, three level teaspoons of Metamucil twice daily -combined with a low-fat diet- effectively lowers cholesterol. Each teaspoon contains roughly 3.4 grams of psyllium, the natural plant fiber in Metamucil, according to the manufacturer.
The fiber works by binding with cholesterol-forming acids and helps them exit the body before they can be absorbed back into the blood, states Louisiana State University professor of nutrition Ruth Patrick.
Research shows that people who add psyllium husk to their diets can lower total and LDL cholesterol levels by up to 15 percent -while leaving 'good' HDL cholesterol intact- according to Men's Health.
