Who uses CPT codes?

Current procedural terminology, or CPT, codes are used by health care providers to describe a medical service or procedure for billing purposes, according to University of Florida Health. Insurance companies also use CTP codes to reimburse health care providers for services provided, according to MB&CC.

CPT codes are five numeric codes published by the American Medical Association, explains University of Florida Health. They are centrally developed to provide a uniform language that describes medical services and procedures.

There are three categories CPT codes. Category one describes procedures performed by health care providers. Category two is used for performance management, while category three contains temporal codes that represent technological development in health care provision, according to MB&CC.
