Gel nail polish is safe when applied correctly. Curing gel nails under a UV nail lamp is considered to be relatively safe. About.com notes that in 2009, there was concern that UV nail lamps posed a risk of developing skin cancer. Premature aging of the skin was another concern.

According to HLNTV.com, dermatology research revealed that the risk of skin cancer is very low. Researchers conclude that it would take more than 13,000 UV nail lamp sessions to equal the UV ray intensity of one phototherapy session. Phototherapy is a medical procedure commonly used to treat psoriasis and other chronic skin conditions. Experts recommend getting gel nail manicures in moderation.
