The USS Ranger, designated CV-61, was decommissioned on July 10, 1993. The ship was kept at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington, while several unsuccessful attempts were made to have it designated as a museum ship. It was towed out for scrapping on March 5, 2015.
CV-61 was named after a previous ship, the USS Ranger designated CV-4. This USS Ranger was decommissioned on October 18, 1946, following the close of World War II.
Six previous ships have used the Ranger name, dating back to the USS Ranger launched in 1777 and commanded by John Paul Jones. This original USS Ranger was captured by the British in 1780 and renamed HMS Halifax.
