Is Utah a dry state?

Utah is not considered a "dry" state, but the alcohol laws that regulate the buying and selling of alcohol are some of the most restrictive in the United States as of 2014. It is a control state, meaning the state government has a monopoly on the retailing of alcoholic beverages.

The restrictive alcohol laws in Utah tie in to the large population of Mormons in the state. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prohibits its members from drinking alcohol, thus limiting the demand for more relaxed alcohol laws. In commercial facilities, such as restaurants, alcohol can not be served after 1 a.m. The state sets a limit of 3.2 percent alcohol by weight in beverages sold in most stores, though beverages with a higher percentage of alcohol can be sold in the state-owned liquor stores.
