Uterine cancer, also referred to as endometrial cancer, is cancer that occurs in the uterus. It is the abnormal, malignant growth of the cells that make up uterine tissue, according to MedicineNet.

Under normal conditions, cells grow and divide to form new cells and replace old or damaged cells, which die off. When this process does not work correctly, cells grow out of control to form a tumor, explains MedicineNet. Women with abnormal overgrowth of the endometrium, obesity, estrogen or tamoxifen use, or a family history of cancer are more likely to get this cancer, notes MedicineNet. Upon diagnosis, the treating physician may recommend such treatment options as surgery, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy and chemotherapy, according to the American Cancer Society.
