What are UVB light bulbs?

UVB light bulbs are a specialty light source used in reptile tanks to provide warmth. Some reptiles, such as the chameleon, cannot survive without UVB lighting.
UVB lighting is important for the care of reptiles because it enables the absorption of vitamin D from food sources. Reptiles' only source of this essential nutrient is sunlight. UVB rays assist in a healthy metabolism and calcium absorption, which is necessary for healthy bone development. Calcium and vitamin D deficiency could lead to soft bones, spinal deformities and organ failure. Pet reptiles, especially lizards and tortoises, require specialty UVB bulbs for development and survival.
