Valerian root is an herbal remedy prepared from a perennial flowering plant commonly used in the treatment of sleep problems, according to WebMD. People also use valerian for stress or anxiety related issues. Other possible uses include the treatment of muscle or joint pain, chronic fatigue syndrome and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Valerian is native to Europe and Asia. Its effects are said to be anxiolytic and sedative, meaning it causes drowsiness and reduces anxiety. The primary medical uses of valerian derive from these properties. Historical accounts of medicinal valerian use also include the treatment of migraines and pain relief and its use as an anticonvulsant and an antiseptic.
