Vaping, or smoking electronic cigarettes, is not healthy, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Users of electronic cigarettes are still typically ingesting nicotine.
E-cigarettes are battery-powered tubes that produce a mist from heating a liquid solution, known as e-liquid, containing propylene glycol, glycerin, flavorings and nicotine. Nicotine is a psychoactive chemical to which smokers become addicted, meaning they crave the substance and suffer withdrawal symptoms without it. Nicotine is harmful to a developing fetus and also has an effect on the developing adolescent brain, according to the CDC. Even if there is no nicotine in the e-liquid, inhaling the chemicals from vaping is less healthy than breathing clean air.
