The Saturn car company was an imprint of General Motors. Established in 1982, General Motors started Saturn in an effort to out-compete the Japanese for the small-car niche in the United States. The brand was changed to the Saturn Corporation in 1985, and all production was halted in late 2010.
The Saturn car brand was successful up until 2003, but too many cars went unsold and GM was forced to discontinue production. Although the initial design of the cars was only moderately successful, the lower prices, when compared to Japanese cars, made Saturn competitive. By 2009 sales faltered, and GM tried to sell the Saturn brand to Penske Automotive Group, which reneged on the deal.
