Replacing the valve cover on an automobile requires using a ratchet and socket set to remove the old cover and replacing it with a new cover. The old gasket will need to be replaced as well as the cover.
To replace a valve cover, mechanics use a new valve cover, a new valve cover gasket, pliers, mallet hammer, screwdriver, brake cleaner spray and scraper. Always wear protective eye wear when working on a vehicle.
- Locate the valve cover
- Remove the old cover
- Remove the gasket
- Attach the new gasket
- Install the new cover
- Check for leaks
Open the hood and locate the valve cover.
Once the bolts have been removed, use a flathead screwdriver to pry the old cover off.
Scrape the gasket off the engine block using a scraper or screwdriver. Make sure all of the gasket material is gone. Remove any oil off the block with a clean rag and brake cleaner spray.
Attach the new gasket to the new valve cover using an adhesive sealant. Lay the valve cover on the block.
Using the bolts, tighten the cover to the block. Adjust the torque of each bolt to the manufacturer's specifications.
With the valve cover secured, check the engine oil level and add oil as needed. Start the engine and look for leaks.
