What is the Virginia creeper plant?

The Virginia creeper is an aggressive vine that can grow to 50 feet. Its red leaves look similar to poison ivy leaves; however Virginia creeper leaves have five leaflets instead of three, and the leaves always have teeth.

The Virginia creeper grows throughout the eastern United States, and as far west as Utah. It adapts well to the surrounding environment. It grows quite rapidly, and left unchecked, it can kill other plants or trees. Its yellow-green flowers appear during the summer, and it also produces purple-black berries that are poisonous to humans. Several animals and insects use it for food, including moths, woodpeckers, squirrels and deer.
