What is a vocational nurse?

Licensed vocational nurse, or LVN, is a job title that is specific to Texas and California. In all other states, this position is known as an LPN, or licensed practical nurse. LVNs work under the supervision of doctors and registered nurses and provide basic nursing care to patients.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for LVNs in 2012 was $41,540, with the top 10 percent earning more than $57,360 and the bottom 10 percent earning less than $30,970. Typically, training to become an LVN requires 1,530 total hours of study, which is between 12 and 14 months of full-time study.
