What do volcanologists wear?

Volcanologists wear heavy boots, long-sleeved shirts and heavy work gloves in order to protect their bodies from lava near a volcano. According to Oregon State University, volcanologists might also wear jeans, a rock-climbing helmet for protection and a gas mask.

Scientists studying different volcanoes also use special devices to help track the activity of the volcano. PBS discusses a device known as a tiltmeter, which is used to measure small changes in the volcano's slope. Thermal images and seismetic monitors also determine the situation of the volcano. By wearing special equipment and using advanced devices, volcanologists are able to study all parts of a volcano.
