What is volcanology?

Volcanology is the study of volcanoes, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica. Volcanology deals with the classification, formation and the distribution of volcanoes in various parts of the world.

Volcanology is a geological science that deals with the correlation between volcanic activity and earthquakes, as well as plate tectonics and mountain formation. Geologists that study in this field are called volcanologists. They collect and study data about eruptions to attempt to forecast future occurrences. Volcanologists seek out ore deposits and map out their locations, especially sulfide mineral deposits. The interest in volcanoes dates back to Mt. Vesuvius and its 79 AD eruption, recorded by Pliny the Younger.
