Walruses have several important features that allow them to retain body heat and mitigate the effects of cold water. Their bodies are designed with minimal surface exposures, which traps body heat and prevents cold water from penetrating. Walruses' in-water circulation also helps them retain body heat.
Another important characteristic that keeps walruses warm is the 6-inch layer of blubber on the outside of their bodies. This blubber provides natural insulation from the cold. A small head with minimal ear exposure is important to thriving in the cold as well. Walruses also use their tusks like ice picks to pull themselves along layers of ice.
