Walt Disney covered his ambulance with sketches and cartoons while volunteering with the Red Cross. Disney joined the Red Cross in 1918 after being turned away from the U.S. military because he was 16 years old.

Disney volunteered overseas in France during World War I. He served as an ambulance driver and a driver for mechanic supply trucks. His passion for drawing and art was present during this time, and he submitted several war-related cartoons to Life magazine. Disney also illustrated posters for the Red Cross, and after his discharge, had a lasting relationship with the group. As of 2014, the Walt Disney Company continues to donate millions of dollars to the Red Cross.
