The capital of the United States, Washington, D.C., is situated in the mid-Atlantic region along the east coast of the mainland. Its absolute location is at 38° 89´ North latitude, 77° 03´ West longitude.
Located between the states of Maryland and Virginia, the city's relative location is 40 miles to the south of Baltimore, Md., and 30 miles west of Annapolis, Md., and the Chesapeake Bay. It is only about 7.5 miles from Alexandria, Va. The nation's capital is situated on the Potomac River. It was built to be the capital city and was founded in 1790. It is not a part of any state, but is instead considered a federal district.
