When are watermelons ripe?

Watermelons are ripe when the stem that links the fruit to the vine is brown and curled. The part that touches the ground is yellow or white, and rapping the watermelon produces a hollow thump when the watermelon is ready to eat.

A mature watermelon's color is less intense on top. Striped watermelons are a lighter green in between the stripes. Ripe watermelons are very round. Choose smooth rinds over bumpy rinds as this indicates a better quality fruit.

If the stem or underside are still green or if it makes a sharp sound when rapped, the watermelon is not ready. Do not pick striped watermelons if the stripes are visible on the bottom.
