Scabies can be treated using insecticide lotions and creams, such as permethrin cream and malathion liquid, as stated by the American Academy of Dermatology. Scabies is a contagious itchy skin condition caused by mites. Severe symptoms of scabies, such as itching and rash, appear on people who have allergic reactions to the mites.
People can visit a dermatologist to receive treatment for scabies. Because scabies can spread from one person to another, it is necessary to seek treatment with family members or those a person has close contact with, including sexual partners. Even individuals who do not show signs need medical attention to help prevent an outbreak of scabies in a household. Common symptoms of scabies include scratching, itching, mite burrows and worsening of existing skin conditions.
Scabies that affect a larger part of the body requires stronger medication, such as ivermectin. These pills are usually taken once in a week. Children and infants that have scabies also require medication for their faces and scalps. The medication should be used as prescribed by a dermatologist. It can take 2 to 3 weeks of using the medication for the condition to disappear. Some patients may need additional treatment, such as antihistamines and antibiotics, to wipe out scabies.
