The Understanding Taxes portal on the Internal Revenue Service's website contains tutorials, simulations and assessments focused taxation, including the basics of preparing and filing tax returns. The interactive lessons cover the hows and whys of taxes and are targeted towards students.

The IRS website contains 38 lessons on taxes — 14 lessons on how U.S. citizens pay taxes and 28 lessons on why American citizens pay taxes. These lessons include balancing the national budget, filling tax returns for small business owners, working with W-2 and W-4 forms and filling a 1099 form. Twenty different tax simulations are offered on the website to help users become comfortable with the U.S. tax system.
