Swirl marks are a series of scratches that have been put in the clear coat of a car by automated washing machines or dirty sponges during hand washing. They can be easily removed using a scratch remover or a polishing compound.
Automotive paint is porous. Contaminants are easily absorbed and should be removed regularly. A clay bar treatment is very effective to remove contaminants and prepare the surface for scratch removal.
After the clay bar treatment, a random orbit polisher is used to apply a fine cut polishing compound. This serves to even out the clear coat and remove the bulk of the swirl marks. Then, a coat of finishing polish is applied, which removes the remaining swirl marks. The last step is an application of a quality wax using the orbital polisher to replace the wax stripped away by the clay bar treatment.
