Which way should a fan turn in the summer?

To optimize a cooling effect during warm summer months, a ceiling fan should be adjusted to rotate in a counter-clockwise direction. While the fan itself does not cool the air, the reverse rotation causes a person in the room to feel cooler by creating a wind chill effect.

In the winter months, however, the fan blades of a ceiling fan should turn in a clockwise motion. The upward draft created by this motion forces the warm air which has risen to the ceiling to be pulled down into the rest of the room. The consumer can save money and energy by putting the fan on the correct setting.
