Certain blood glucose monitors allow patients to obtain blood samples from sites other than the fingertip, such as the forearm, upper arm, thigh and base of the thumb, states WebMD. Continuous glucose monitoring, which involves implanting a small sensor under the skin, is another alternative to finger-stick glucose testing.

The sensors used in continuous glucose monitoring systems typically stay in place for a week, states the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. These sensors monitor glucose levels in tissue fluid and send the results to a wireless monitor. Although it is a more expensive option, continuous blood glucose monitoring often allows patients improved blood glucose control.
