Ways to remove scratches from wood furniture include scraping off scratches with sandpaper, wiping the scratched area with a clean cloth and using an appropriate felt-tip marker to fill the scratch. Sandpaper and paste wax are necessary for this task.
For shallow scratches, apply clear nail polish to a clean cloth, use the cloth to wipe the scratched area, allow the area to dry, and use 600-grit sandpaper to rub the area gently. Apply paste wax over the area. To remove large scratches, use a felt-tip marker, eyebrow pencil or wax crayon of the same color as the stain to fill the scratch, and apply paste wax. Alternatively, insert a stick with a cotton tip into coffee grounds, and wipe the surface.
For a surface with little hillocks that border the scratches, level the surface with 600-grit sandpaper, and use a wax stick of the same color as the stain to dab the area as needed. Use a credit card to scrape off extra wax, and apply paste wax to the surface.
If scratches cover the entire surface of the wood, remove old paint from the wood with a paint-stripping product, use medium-grit sandpaper to sand the surface, and smooth the area with light-grit sandpaper. Apply a stain that matches the color of the wood, and let the stain dry. Next, apply paste wax, polyurethane or varnish. Take care not to sand wood veneer surfaces.
