The best way to get rid of a skunk is to capture it. Bait a raccoon-sized trap with either cat food or marshmallows, preferably in a shaded part of the yard. Once the animal is captured, it's important to release it at least 10 miles away.

Do not attempt to poison a skunk, as there are no registered skunk repellents. Instead, to prevent skunks from living on the property, cut off their food sources: fallen fruits, gardens, trash cans and pet food. Denying it a food source effectively gets rid of the current skunk, while assuring that no other skunks attempt to move in. Once the skunk is gone, build a steel mesh inclusion barrier around the structure as a precaution to prevent others from invading the property.
