Doctors typically treat moderate or severe cases of prurigo of pregnancy with steroids or topical emollients combined with oral antihistamines, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Pregnant women with milder cases can usually find symptom relief with home remedies.

Prurigo, which is itchy skin, occurs in approximately one out of every 300 pregnancies, explains American Family Physician. This common skin condition can occur during all trimesters of the pregnancy and up to three months after birth.

Home remedies for treating mild cases of prurigo include frequently applying unscented moisturizer or lotion and wearing loose clothing that is made of natural fibers, reports the American Pregnancy Association.
