The Weddell Sea is at the extreme south of the Atlantic Ocean. The Antarctic Peninsula of West Antarctica forms the sea's western boundary, while the Coats Land of East Antarctica forms its eastern boundary. The Filchner and Ronne ice shelves are at the southern end of the Weddell Sea.

The total area of the Weddell Sea is around 1.08 million square miles. Due to its location, the sea experiences severe weather and heavy icing. As a result, few oceanographers have explored the region, although many attempts occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. Floating ice stations and modern icebreakers have made more extensive exploration possible.
