The Weddell Sea is part of the Southern Ocean and borders Antarctica. The sea is named after the Scottish sailor James Weddell, who sailed its waters in 1823.

James Weddell originally named the Weddell Sea after King George IV, but the sea was renamed in Weddell's honor in 1900. The Weddell Sea has an area of about 1,080,000 square miles. Dutch researchers found that they could see a Secchi disc, a circular white disk used to measure the transparency of water, at a depth of 262 feet. On Oct. 13, 1986, the researchers concluded that the Weddell Sea was as clear as distilled water.
