A wenge finish is a dark, almost black color with black streaks that makes the wood look like real wenge wood. As of 2014, wenge wood is on the endangered wood list, so it is hard to find and is very expensive.
Wenge is found predominately in Africa. It is a hard-wooded tree that grows 60 to 90 feet tall and has a 3 to 4 foot diameter.
Wenge wood has a coarse texture that is difficult to work with. When sanding the wood, care must be taken not to get any splinters as they are susceptible to infection. Breathing the dust can affect the central nervous system.
