The 2008 Democratic Party candidates were Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, and Dennis Kucinich, in addition to Joe Biden, Mike Gravel, Christopher Dodd, Evan Bayh and Tom Vilsak. Illinois Senator Barack Obama was elected 44th President of the United States, along with Vice President Joe Biden.
Barack Obama defeated Republican Party candidate John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin, winning 52.9 percent of the vote. He won the highest popular vote for a Democratic candidate since 1964. The election, which took place on Nov. 8, 2008, was the 56th presidential election and had the highest voter turnout rate in four decades.
